Ok, so booktok is having a MOMENT. Older series’ are being catapulted into superstardom, indie authors are getting book and movie deals, writers with good social media presence are being insanely rewarded and we are all collectively falling back in love with reading. Bookstores are being brought back to life and our kindle readers have never had to be charged so much. BUT while many of the popular books are totally worth the hype – some have fallen tragically short (for me). Here we go:

POPULAR BOOKTOK BOOKS: WHICH ONES ARE WORTH THE READ?

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO – TAYLOR JENKINS REID

4/5 STARS

Taylor Jenkins Reid could write a grocery list and I’d want to read it, if I’m being honest. I LOVE every single thing I’ve read by her, TSHOEH is no exception. I love that her books’ universes intertwine so that we catch glimpses of other characters from other books every now and then, and her writing has you mesmerized from the first page. Absolutely worth the hype!

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES – SARAH J MAAS

5/5 STARS

Sarah J Maas got me excited to read again. I started reading after my second baby was born this past February, this series reminded me why I love reading and why I could hardly put books down in high school. I have loved everything I’ve read of hers, and her books are truly a joy to read, start to finish. This is a great entrance to fantasy and the characters will stick with you.

BOOK LOVERS – EMILY HENRY

5/5 STARS

I think this is my number one read of 2022. I LOVED this book. It was cheeky, flirty, angsty and frustrating all at the same time. Emily Henry is an incredible writer and her ability to write larger-than-the-page characters is unmatched. I have recommended this book to everyone!!!

ICE PLANET BARBARIANS – RUBY DIXON

2/5 STARS

You guys can skip this one. I cannot understand why it got the hype it did. It’s basically smut (and honestly..not even good smut??????) with a weird and completely unfleshed out plot. Characters were one dimensional and even the humor was cringe-y. I didn’t bother reading the rest of the series – which is ALMOST unheard of for me – and could barely finish this one. I feel like I’m pretty generous with my book reviews so the fact that I am struggling to find anything good to say here is a big deal.

VERITY – COLLEEN HOOVER

4/5 STARS

This was actually really popular about two years ago – and got a resurgence on Booktok this spring. I loved it. It is Colleen Hoover’s first thriller/suspense novel vs her typical romances and I think she did an amazing job. The book keeps you guessing all the way up until the very end!

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS – ALI HAZELWOOD

3/5 STARS

This is so cute and definitely worth the read. I didn’t rate it higher simply because I felt the characters could have been fleshed out JUST a bit more. Overall though, the story was very cute and a quick, fun read. I like Ali Hazelwood’s writing style, and enjoy her books as palette cleansers between my fantasy series reads.

A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER – HOLLY JACKSON

3/5 STARS

Books one and two of this series were fabulous – the writing was quick paced, the characters were quippy and fun, the stories were fresh and exciting. The third book however – oof. It DRAGGED and the ending just seemed really out of character for our MC. I loved Pip so much and I feel like the third book just turned her into someone she wasn’t. That said, I liked the series overall. Not worth a re-read however.
