Ok. That’s not to say that if you don’t love Halloween, you’re a bad person…I just have a certain soft spot in my heart for my tribe (and I don’t use that word lightly). Let’s begin by saying: I LOVE Halloween. I seriously love it. More than Christmas, more than my birthday (and I am the birthday QUEEN), more than Fourth of July…I love love love love LOOOOOVE Halloween. And here are a bunch of reasons nobody asked for as to why if you also love Halloween, you are my favorite person. Let’s dive right into this.

Why People Who Love Halloween Are The BEST Kind Of People

Why People Who Love Halloween Are The BEST Kind Of People

Reason #1: We appreciate mischief.

This is the only time outside of April Fool’s Day (and literally nobody celebrates April Fool’s Day. They just don’t) that grown ups can be silly and pull pranks on one another without being seen as a goofball kid. And I love it. Popping out and scaring your husband is NO LONGER frowned upon, and you will typically get a lot of good laughs this time of year. You can be mischievous and totally get away with it, in fact, it’s celebrated and expected.

Reason #2: We don’t judge each other.

It doesn’t matter if you are wearing a silly t-shirt with funny writing on it as a last minute costume (looking at you Adam of two years ago) or a full blown Pennywise The Dancing Clown costume you’ve been hand sewing for the last 6 months. We all come together laugh about it and enjoy the fact that we are all full grown adults in costumes. The party is for everyone. You’ll notice people who DON’T like Halloween are SUPER judge-y of those of us who do……..

Reason #3: We don’t discriminate based on age.

This is a holiday that is for all age groups! From infant to grandparent, everyone is welcome here. I’m a BIG fan of family costumes (one of the things I’m MOST excited about when I have tiny humans one day). Getting everyone together to have a big gathering of fun costumes and laughs is my idea of a good time. Kids can go trick or treating, adults can have costume parties, there is something for everyone and I love that!

Reason #4: We value self-expression.

You are able to make your Halloween costume absolutely your own! It’s personally my very favorite holiday because of all the incredible special effects makeup and amazing artistry that comes out of the woodwork and is rarely seen or congratulated unless you live in Hollywood. I could watch hours upon hours of special effects makeup artists do their work — creating monsters out of plaster and latex. It’s mesmerizing and it allows those who have a talent for this kind of self expression to absolutely SHINE. But the best part is, if you DON’T have a talent for SFX makeup, that’s cool, too. We love that you try anyways and think you’re doing a great job!

Reason #5: We believe that candy calories don’t count for the entire month of October.

Ask any Halloween lover and they will tell you it’s true. I eat my weight and more in Reese’s pumpkins and I don’t even bat an eyelash. It’s Halloween and I’ll eat whatever I want (my dentist wishes I wouldn’t, but he can’t win them all). Bring on all the chocolate, sweet tarts, and sour gummy worms. My belly is READY.

Reason #6: We are secret adrenaline junkies, and enjoy a good scare.

Halloween lovers may not be jumping out of planes to get that adrenaline rush, but you sure as heck saw us sitting in the front row of the newest IT movie. There is a certain thrill to being scared silly at a scary movie or a haunted house you just can’t replicate elsewhere. I personally love being scared at haunted attractions because I know it’s not real. It’s just for fun! It’s just like any other mildly scary activity. I get my blood pumping and my heart beating and I force my husband to come along with me because I still need someone’s hand to hold. I appreciate any haunted house that can actually REALLY scare me (it’s surprisingly hard to do). I’m looking for good ones in the St. Louis area and will keep you posted).

Basically, it’s super hard for me to understand why people hate Halloween so much. It’s fun for kids, fun for adults and there’s something for everyone. If you don’t love scary, that’s okay, you can do pumpkin carving, trick or treating and apple cider! If you DO love scary, haunted houses, scary movies and SFX makeup are right up your alley.

I have never celebrated Halloween for religious reasons (I think you read my post on it yesterday), but I am trying to find a balance, and maybe celebrate for fun while still upholding my beliefs. I really enjoy dressing up in costume, being creative, and being a kid, so I would like to adjust a bit and learn how to do both 🙂
