Happy FRI-YAY, everyone! and happy, happy February 1st. Fun fact about Feb 1st: By the end of next week, 80% of everyone who has committed to maintaining a new year goal or resolution ultimately fails or quits. That is a HUGE amount of people who don’t even make it all the through the second month of the year before deciding they have already failed, or no longer wish to continue on with the promises they made to themselves at the beginning of the year. Luckily, here at B&A, we aren’t quitters. But sometimes we do get overwhelmed (I’m so guilty) at the size of my goals and it can be SO scary to look at that big goal list. However – I’m committed to seeing each of my goals through to the end of the year and I’ve compiled a list of ways to STAY FOCUSED – while successfully avoiding burnout.

Change ONE behavior at a time.

Instead of making at list of 15 different behaviors to change all at once, try changing one at a time. Try making habits for yourself and work on things for 21 days instead! Or pick just a few to work on during the year. Don’t bombard yourself with an unattainable amount of change and expect it to happen overnight. It’s just not realistic.

Talk about it with friends and family.

Find people to help you stay accountable. It helps if you have friends to keep you motivated throughout the year. Find people who have similar goals to keep you on your a-game. Check in with each other – cheer on each other’s successes and help each other get over the hump of a failure. This can be a best friend, a spouse, a significant other, a parent, a business coach. Whoever you are close to that understands your goals and your aspirations works here.

Don’t consider yourself a failure just because you missed a step. Start over and relax!

This is a big one for me. I am queen of “well, I missed it this time. I’ll wait until next year”. But that isn’t the best way to live your life. Just because you make a mistake, or miss a day, or a week, of whatever your goal is – doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Instead – pick yourself up and start over. Don’t beat yourself up because you fell back into your old habits. It happens to everyone. It’s SO perfectly normal. Just do your best and keep trying.

Create shorter time frames. Consider quarterly goals vs yearly goals.

This is what I like to do. I prefer to make quarterly goals and then have over-arching yearly goals. But I focus my time and energy on these shorter time frames. They help keep things in perspective and aren’t so far off. They wrap up fairly quickly, and you can measure your success a lot easier this way. If that is still too much – try monthly goals! It’s a great way to build habits, keep track of long term success and avoid that dreaded burn out.

Treat yourself for success!

Allow yourself to CELEBRATE when you’ve had successes. It’s exciting, it’s important, and you DID it. Whatever your goal was that you hit or achieved: be excited for it. Don’t just pass it by. It’s a motivator to know that if you finish x, you get y. Be it a night out, a new outfit, a day off. Whatever it is that motivates you to complete a goal: set that as your treat.

Allow yourself to re-evaluate your goals if needed.

This is a big one I think for everyone. We don’t feel that we can re-evaluate our goals if we don’t reach them. Instead of being so upset that you don’t even try to continue on with your goals – rethink your goals and maybe lower your bar just a little bit to be more attainable. There are several times a year I sit down with my goals and see if I’m still on track for what I’m supposed to be doing by the end of the year. If I’m not, and I can’t feasibly get to my end goal by my set time, I will reassess and create something that still stretches me, but is more attainable.
