Faux Leather Jacket Guide
Happy #FASHIONWEDNESDAY! January is in full swing now and it is officially only 16 days until my birthday. 22, here I come!!! A and I have been spending the week with his family in Louisiana, so the weather has been warm, even if a little rainy. A far cry from the blizzards that took over the week we graduated in Idaho. Totally not complaining. I hope that you are having an amazing week thus far and are killing it in 2017. Today, I am going to be breaking down how to choose the PERFECT jacket with this faux leather jacket guide for spring. Also ps LOOK AT MY NEW HAIR.
Faux Leather Jacket Guide
TIP ONE: Go faux.
If this isn’t obvious from the title, my opinion is that the fashion industry has made it so easy to wear beautiful items of clothing (leather, fur, etc), without hurting innocent animals in the process. In my opinion, they typically look just as beautiful and feel just as soft when compared to their real counterpart. Another plus? The price is always better. Real leather jackets can range between $250-500 (and MORE), while good vegan leather sits around $50-100. I don’t have $500 to spend on a jacket, so this option (along with the other awesome benefits) makes the most sense to my wallet.
TIP TWO: Choose the right fit.
Too big in the shoulders and it’s going to hang funny. Too long in the arms and you’re going to get annoyed. To wide in the waist, and you’ll never wear it. It’s the same song I’ve been singing since the beginning: buy clothing that fits right now. Don’t buy clothing that might fit in the future, or that you only feel like 7/10 about in the dressing room. If this jacket doesn’t hug you like your long-lost BFF in jacket form, move on. Your perfect match is out there.
TIP THREE: Hips are your friend.
This kind of ties into #2, but I want to focus on the hip length specifically here. Don’t cut your torso off by choose and too-long leather jacket. It should fall right at your hip or roughly where mid-rise jeans fall on you. That breaks up the typical body in a super flattering way. If you plan on pairing it with a dress or longer sweater, even going a little bit above the hip would work, too. Just avoid going too-long for fear of looking like the leather jacket swallowed you whole.
TIP FOUR: Cost-per-wear.
When shopping for clothing, I always do the cost-per-wear calculator I keep in my head. I know I would never wear bright neon leather jackets. It’s not who I am, and it doesn’t make sense to spend $100 on something I’ll maybe wear once or twice with an extremely specific outfit. I’m on a budget, so that means if I’m spending more than $30 on something, I need to be able to pair it with multiple things. That’s why I will always stick to the black-brown-tan trio of colors for basics like the leather jacket. This is totally personal though: if you ARE someone who rocks neon clothing on the daily, it might be worth it for you to invest in a bright yellow leather jacket.
TIP FIVE: Light vs heavy.
I have had both styles. The one in this post is on the heavy side (which is how I prefer it). It is a sturdy, well-made jacket. It has pretty hardware and doesn’t feel as though it is going to fall apart before next season. The lighter jackets, while easier to wear in the summer, tend not to be lined and therefore often fall apart months, even years, before the heavier jackets. It all comes back to how an item in made. I check my leather jackets like I check my blazers. It’s important to buy it lined. Not only does that detail make it look more expensive than it probably is, but it ensures durability and longevity of the item.
I know it can be hard to find the perfect leather jacket, so I’ve linked 4 of them in this post (two under $50, and two under $100). They are all extremely similar to the jacket I have on in this post.
