Happy #FASHIONWEDNESDAY! I am working on breaking out of my normal chunky-sweater-skinny-jean-and-tall-boot winter rut and adding fun new styles to my collection this year (see my big fluffy coat from last week) – so today we are diving into a trend that I have been SO TERRIFIED I could not pull off to save my life: the PONCHO. The last time I wore a poncho was probably the 3rd grade when they were all the rage. These days, they are definitely more chic than back in 2003. This one is from Kindred (the same shop I snagged that faux fur coat) and it’s a really comfortable knit fabric. Anyways: let’s dive into how to style your very own poncho this year.

Cozy Winter Poncho Look: A Revamped Trend To Try
Step One: Go for a neutral-ISH bottom layer.
You have to wear something underneath a poncho 1. so you don’t expose yourself to the world (unless you’re into that kinda thing..then you do you) and 2. because it’s winter and it’s cold dang it. I opted for a black turtle neck because I don’t know how to wear anything else this winter apparently – it’s really warm and it’s super neutral.
HOWEVER: you don’t have to do color blocking with solid colors here. Definitely don’t go over the top because your poncho needs to shine here. Another cute option would be horizontal stripes or a light colored plaid. They are festive AND won’t distract too much from your poncho look.
Step Two: Wear your favorite pair of skinny jeans.
I love my dish denim jeans, personally, but you can take your pick on whichever jeans make you feel the absolute BEST. I opted for darker denim because it’s wintertime and I prefer dark denim in the winter. These are a pretty solid wash – but a really good pair of black distressed denim would also look AMAZING here. Excuse me while I go find a pair to add-to-cart.
Step Three: Pick a pair of killer shoes.
You have a lot of freedom here to play. Your shoes can be totally fabulous and even a little bit flashy. My poncho is gray – so I am going to stay away from brown because I don’t LOVE mixing browns and grays together. I would usually head for my go-to black wedge booties but I’ve worn them to DEATH this season so I am switching it up.
Instead of my usual, I opted for my velvet over-the-knee boots from last season. They are SO chic, SO comfortable, and fancy AF. I love that they don’t compete with my poncho, but rather compliment the knit really nicely. 10/10.
PIN THIS FOR LATER:
I am obsessed with how cute this outfit turned out. It’s warm, it’s cozy, and it’s still chic. It’s almost like wearing a comfortable sweatshirt without looking like you left the house in your pajamas. #winnerwinner They also flatter just about EVERY single body type. They hide the areas a lot of people are insecure about without adding any bulk.
Do you have a poncho you are wearing this season? Does this make you want to pick one up?! Let me know in the comments below!!
