5 Ways to Fight Off Premature Skin Aging

Here are some statistics you may not know: driven by the growth of studies and new product innovations in the field of skincare, more consumers now invest in products that would bring them a youthful glow (hi, don’t we all want that?). From just 20% of American women in 2012, a 2018 study noted that more than half of Gen-Z women consider anti-aging products to be essential in their routines. And they are right — as we grow older, our skin changes, too. I know my skin at 26 is SO much different than my skin was at 18, 20 or even 22! Read on to get all my tips:
5 Ways to Fight Off Premature Skin Aging
ONE: Have a well-balanced diet
Remember the adage, You are what you eat? It’s true: What you eat tends to be reflected in your skin and complexion. So to prevent premature skin aging, opt for food rich in protein for collagen production and Vitamin C for that radiant look. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, too, especially those full of antioxidants, to help repair and prevent further skin damage. Also, avoid consuming too much sugar and refined carbohydrates, as they can accelerate aging. And of course, don’t forget to drink at least eight glasses of fluids a day. My favorite way to stay hydrated is by using my favorite S|M cup.
TWO: Be mindful of skincare ingredients
That feeling of burning or stinging after your skincare routine is not a sign that your products are more being effective. If anything, that is a clear sign to switch to products with gentler and more rejuvenating ingredients, such as retinoids.
Made from Vitamin A, retinoids boost collagen and elastin production. That’s what makes it a must-have ingredient in a good anti-aging skincare routine. You can also find it in the form of Retinal MD, which is more powerful but gentler than Retinol. Meanwhile, a natural alternative that’s steadily becoming more popular these days is Bakuchiol, which serves to renew your skin and fight off deep wrinkles as well. You can also look into products with niacinamide (one of my ALL-TIME favorite skin ingredients), which is a form of Vitamin B3 that fights free radical damage and brightens dark spots, and hyaluronic acid, which fully hydrates the skin.
THREE: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
As you age, your oil glands become less active, and this leads to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To avoid these issues, make sure that you regularly use moisturizer. There is a HUGE myth that if you have oily skin – you shouldn’t use moisturizer. That has been debunked over and over again. Moisturizer is HUGELY important – no matter your skin type. This product traps water in your skin, so it remains hydrated and looking youthful. Ideally, you should put moisturizer while your skin is still damp because the moisture will help in absorbing the product easily. Just remember to use gentle upward strokes, and don’t forget your neck and upper torso.
FOUR: Shield your skin from the sun
Always apply sunscreen (I talk about that more in depth here) — in every season and location. The regular use of sunscreen with at least SPF 30 will keep your skin healthy and prevent discoloration and age spots. The key is to apply it to areas not covered by clothing. And yes, you should do it even if it’s cloudy outside or you’re just staying indoors. UV radiation still penetrates through the clouds, and sitting near windows or in front of your computer screen makes you exposed to skin-damaging light, too. My husband can attest that YES – you can even burn when it’s cloudy outside!
FIVE: Quit damaging habits
Personally, I don’t drink or smoke (I’ve just never had the urge to do so) – and science has come out with a lot of information on why excesses use of both is really damaging to your health. While having a glass of wine every now and then is fine, drinking too much alcohol can dehydrate and damage your skin in the long run. Additionally, smoking (along with the other HOST of awful side effects) also hastens the breakdown of collagen and deprives your skin of oxygen and nutrients. As a result, you will have wrinkles and a dull complexion. While it’s totally understandable that shaking these habits immediately won’t be easy, the long-term effects will certainly be worth it.
